About the Songs

Hi and welcome to my very first CD! I have been hooked on singing ever since I was 14 years old and got up to do a solo in choir at my junior high school in 9th grade, and realized I had a voice. Whatever has gone on in my life since then, singing has always been my greatest outlet of expression. Sad or happy, I know I can always SING about it!

I have known most of the songs on this CD for years and have been singing some of them for just as long. They are all personal favorites.

I have always loved Rosemary Clooney’s rendition of the Theme from Peyton Place and decided when I first heard her sing it years ago (when the movie Peyton Place was run on the Late Late Show) that I would myself sing and record it some day.

Although a number of singers have recorded This is All I Ask, I first heard it on a live recording of Kate Smith performing at Carnegie Hall and fell in love with both the song and her singing.

Dick Gallagher, my wonderful music director, suggested I sing the song Her Face from the musical Carnival and I’m glad he did. It’s a beautiful song and I love singing it.

God Bless The Child was actually written by the legendary Billie Holiday and I’ve been singing it ever since I did my first cabaret show back in 19–- ... never mind.

A friend of mine, Jimmy Kichler, who is also a cabaret singer, gave me his album over ten years ago in which he sang You And I from Goodbye Mr. Chips - another moving and beautiful song.

Why Did I Choose You is a song I used to sing in my singing waiter days. It is originally from a musical version of The Yearling.

I am a great fan of the late legendary singer Libby Holman, whose career was unfortunately cut short by a scandal. I got Who’s That Knockin’ At My Door from a recording of it she did in the 1920’s. She toured and recorded with the late great Josh White in the 1930’s when she recorded CC Rider and In The Evening (two classic blues pieces) to guitar accompaniment. Rare recordings that I enjoy tremendously.
Ella Fitzgerald’s recording of My Romance is where I first learned and loved that beautiful song. If Love Were All I first heard on the Judy Live At Carnegie Hall album, by of course the sublime Judy Garland. I first heard the song Do It Again sung by Judy as well.

You might be asking yourself how a nice Jewish boy like me go to be interested in singing gospel as well as spirituals and hymns (I’ve taken a stab at all three). When I was young, my mother (who I got my voice from) used to sing the song In the Garden and other hymns she learned as a girl, as she was doing her work around our house. When I was 16, I learned some more hymns and spirituals from being in a school production of Our Town. I became a big fan of Mahalia Jackson’s recordings when I was in my 20’s and it was there that I learned His Eye Is On The Sparrow.

I was watching an arts program on the Cuny Channel and that’s where I first heard Old Friend from I’m Getting My Act Together And Taking It On The Road, very movingly sung by Michael Feinstein.
I’ve got dozens more songs I’d love to sing for you and I hope this is the first of many musical adventures for “You And I.”

Yours in Music
